Lasting Joy for the New Year

As this year gives way to the unfolding of a new one, I must share some truths that are often overlooked. Many confess a belief in God and Jesus, his son. We pray to God, sing about Jesus and can quote many bible verses that refer to patience, peace and prosperity. But I've received confirmation that while many churches reach out to the unsaved in their communities, there is still a desparate need for "inter-evangelism". By that I mean that many Christians are still unaware of the source of problem-solving power they have, and how to envoke that power when needed. Why do so many believers get despondent when confronted with issues of life (illness, financial setbacks, broken relationships, rebellious children, etc)? Because we are overlooking the promises Jesus made after His resurrection, before returning to His father. Jesus told his disciples that He must return to God but he was not leaving them powerless. Have you read St. John 14 recently? "I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14: 12-27)

Christians have on-going, direct access to the Holy Spirit, the third person of the God-head (many use the word 'Trinity'). The Holy Spirit is the person who dwells daily with us. We are very often negligent about our fellowship with Him. Many of our churches refrain from stressing His importance in the life of a Christian. As a result, our human nature continues to strive to solve problems based on our intellect and experiences (the result is often burn-out and depression). I'm convinced that in order to have lasting joy for the new year, and years to come....we must first acknowledge that we have not regularly prayed to, and fellowshipped with (specifically) the Holy Spirit. Then its time to repent and ask for forgiveness for overlooking His presence. Thirdly, we must make fellowship with the Holy Spirit a priority. Jesus had several roles/duties while on earth in human form. Likewise, the Holy Spirit has a current ministry of empowerment in the life of believers. He helps us practice the much-needed principles of righteous living! We cannot mature and turn from our wicked thinking and wicked ways without the enablement of the Holy Spirit. Men, women, boys and girls will experience more success and inner joy....by requesting the Holy Spirit to give wisdom, ability, and assurance in all life situations. I have more to say next time....but let me know what you think so far. Lady Peace

  1. You are so right. Unfortunately, mainline denominations (Baptist) shy away from the Holy Spirit. Anthing beyong "chill bumps" a "loud shout," and you are bold enough, a "holy dance," and many are clueless about the Spirit. No wonder many are weak and suffering needlessly.

  2. I agree with you. Many are not willing and/or spiritually mature enough to experience the many blessings that come with allowing the Holy Spirit to dwell within. Oh, if only we could look beyond ourselves and see what God has for us in the Spirit.
